As we know, eating is an activity that cannot be missed in our daily lives. In fact, every day humans need food as a source of energy in carrying out daily activities.

When we are about to eat, it would be nice to read a supplication first. Reciting Dua before and after meals is a way for us to give thanks to Allah SWT.

Besides that, reciting Duas makes us always remember Allah SWT. The activity of eating will be even more blessed. Reading the Dua before and after eating and drinking should be taught from childhood so that they are accustomed to doing it.

The importance of teaching the Duas to children aims to instill the habit of reciting the Duas when they want to do all activities.

Dua Before Eating Bismillah

بِسْمِ اللهِ

Bismillah

In The Name Of Allah

If you forget to recite bismillah and you are already to eating, you may recite:

بِسمِ اللهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَه

Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu

In the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end.

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Al-Quran about eating

فَكُلُوا مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا وَاشْكُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ

“Then eat of what Allah has provided for you (which is) lawful and good. And be grateful for the favour of Allah, if it is (indeed) Him that you worship.”(Surah An-Nahl, 16:114)

Hadith about dua before and after eating

  • Prophet s.a.w said: When any of you wants to eat, he should mention the Name of Allah (Bismillah) in the beginning. If he forgets to do it in the beginning, he should say (I begin with the Name of Allah at the beginning and at the end)."(Sunan Abi Daud)
  • Narrated by Imam Malik that traces back to the Tabi’in (figures that met the companions of the Prophet s.a.w) Urwah Ibn Az-Zubayr: Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waqina azaban-nar(Muwatta’ Malik)
  • The Prophet s.a.w. Also taught us the following Dua: Alhamdu-lillahil-lazi at’amana wa saqana wa ja’alana muslimin(Sunan At-Tirmizi)
  • Narated in Al-bukhari by Abu Umamah, may Allah be pleased with him: Whenever the Prophet (saws) finished a meal, he would say: “Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran taiyyiban mubarakan fihi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la muwadda`in, wa la mustaghnan `anhu, Rabbuna. (All praise is due to Allah, praise which is abundant, pure, and full of blessings, which is indispensable and to which one cannot be indifferent).”  Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5458 In-book reference : Book 70, Hadith 87

Etiquette when eating 

1. Wash both hands

2. Read Bismillah 

3. Read a Dua before eating 

4. Eat politely 

5. Read the Dua when finished
